Ian Boswell was one of four to be invested as Assistant Provincial Grand Master at the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in Blackpool. Ian now becomes responsible for the Widnes Group along with Warrington and Woolton Groups.
It was a special family affair when Ian was invested as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master, because Ian’s chain bearer was his father, Ken, who proposed him into Freemasonry in 1981.
Ian was proposed into Travellers' Lodge No 4679 in the Warrington Group by his father, Ken Boswell. He became WM of that lodge in 1993. Ian is also a member of Mersey Valley Lodge of Installed Masters No 9057, Quingenti Lodge No 8516, Lathom Lodge of Installed Masters No 2229 and recently was made an honorary member of Birchwood Lodge No 8861.
Ian has a long history of service to the Warrington Group of Lodges and Chapters. In 1997 Ian was appointed as the group secretary. After six years as group secretary Ian served as vice chairman of the group for one year and was then appointed group chairman in May 2004.
In 1998 Ian received his first appointment in Provincial Grand Lodge as an acting Provincial Grand Steward. In 2002 he was promoted to Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden. Promotion to Grand rank followed in 2005 when Ian was appointed Past Assitant Grand Director of Ceremonies.

Ian was exalted into Travellers’ Chapter No 4679 in 1985. He was installed as first principal in 1997. Ian is also a member of Provincial Grand Stewards' Chapter No 8516 and Loyalty Chapter No 897. Ian was appointed PrGStwd in 1999 and promoted to PPrGSN in 2003 with appointment to Grand Chapter as PGStdB in 2006.
Ian was educated at Woolston County Primary School, Warrington and then attended Wade Deacon Grammar School, Widnes. He went on to take a chemical engineering degree at Teesside Polytechnic (now University of Teesside). Ian has worked as a design engineer in the chemical, petroleum and nuclear industries since leaving university. He now works as a technology manager in the engineering design department of the National Nuclear Laboratory at their Risley site near Warrington.
Ian and his wife Linda have two teenage children. A busy home life, full-time employment and a fairly full Masonic diary do not leave Ian a lot of other leisure time. Away from the Masonic scene, Ian says: “Linda and I enjoy attending 1940's jive and lindyhop dances and 1950's rock'n'roll nights.”
When asked about his appointment as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master Ian said: “I am very proud that I have been offered this opportunity to further serve Freemasonry and I was delighted that my father was my chain bearer when I was invested.”
Widnes Group now looks forward to the first of many visits from Ian, which start on Wednesday 28 September when he will be the guest of honour at Hale Lodge of Fellowship No 3799 installation meeting. Group Chairman David Redhead said, “I have known Ian for many years and we have a good working relationship and I am sure that over the coming years our relationship will become even stronger”.
